How to Prepare for a Doctor Visit

When I was about 14 years old, I went to a dermatologist in hopes to find a solution to Hyperhidrosis. In the meeting, the doctor told me

“We don’t know why it happens, and there is no cure.”

I was devastated to hear this! This made me very hesitant to go back to the doctor. For many years after that, anytime I told a doctor about Hyperhidrosis, they had no idea what Hyperhidrosis was or how to manage it. As a result, I started to not even put it on my medical history.

Fast forward to today. I’ve traveled to Mexico City to visit my family's Naturalist doctor where I was given a powder to use! It worked, but alas over time my body built resistance and the effects were not as effective. I was later recommended to an Endocrinologist. This doctor knew what he was talking about! For seven years I took the same oral medication. Honestly, the side effects bothered me but I managed them until I couldn’t because it was better than nothing. Ironically, this occurred around the same time my doctor decided to retire.

Now I am on a mission to find the right doctor and let me tell you; it’s difficult.

There’s a difference between a doctor saying they treat Hyperhidrosis, and then one that stays up to date with current products and keeps in the loop with the ongoing research. Now, that there is more awareness for Hyperhidrosis, there is more potential for effective treatment. Going to a provider to help you with Hyperhidrosis can be intimidating but it is important to speak up and let them know what you are experiencing and what you need.

I have paid for too many appointments where I find out the doctor does not know much about Hyperhidrosis despite their website saying they treat it. The best doctors I’ve been to did not list Hyperhidrosis on their website. So do not be discouraged to ask.
